Scripture seeks to give us an identity. It says, in effect, that humans are not legitimately inhabitants of the far country, that they are not prodigals or slaves. Rather, they are children of their Father and belong to their Father.

Do You Believe In The Sermon on the Mount?
The fact is that the Sermon on the Mount is not in our creeds. As the Apostles’ Creed now stands you can accept every word of it and leave the essential self untouched. Suppose we had written it in our creeds and had repeated each time with conviction: “I believe in the Sermon on the Mount and in its way of life, and I intend, God helping me, to embody it!” What would have happened? I feel sure that if this had been our main emphasis, the history of Christendom would have been different.

To Love Means To Bleed
But to stand alongside sin in the loved one means that God would suffer, for it is the nature of love to insinuate itself into the sins and sorrows of the loved one and make them its own. If love stays out, it is not love. If it gets in, it bleeds. All love has the doom of bleeding upon it as long as there is sin in the loved one.

Augustine Honestly Addressing Inauthentic Prayer
As a youth I had been woefully at fault, particularly in early adolescence. I had prayed to You for chastity and said, ‘Give me chastity and continence, but not yet.’ For I was afraid that You would answer my prayer at once and cure me too soon of the disease of lust, which I wanted satisfied, not quelled.
- Saint Augustine, Confessions
